Perched dramatically atop sheer limestone bluffs dropping straight into the turquoise Adriatic Sea, Polignano a Mare is one of the most visually captivating coastal escapes in Puglia. Taking a quick day trip south from our base in Bari, we set out to explore its dramatic sea-carved caves, whitewashed historic center, and world-famous coastal gorge before heading back to our hotel in the city for the evening.
Highlights from a Day on the Cliffs
Lama Monachile (Cala Porto): The defining vista of Polignano—a narrow pebble beach wedged between sheer rock faces, framed from above by the ancient Roman Bourbon bridge. Looking down at the clear green-blue water cutting through the canyon offered unbeatable vantage points for landscape photography and wide-angle panoramas.
The Cliffside Balconies: Winding through the labyrinth of the Centro Storico, quiet cobblestone alleys suddenly open into dramatic viewing terraces (terrazze) suspended high above crashing waves and deep marine caves.
Old Town Poetry & Alleys: Tucked behind the dramatic coast, the pedestrian quarter features whitewashed stone facades, vibrant bougainvillea, and verses of Italian poetry painted directly onto wooden doorways and stone steps.
Evening Return to Bari: After an afternoon of wandering the bluffs and grabbing an espresso and gelato by the piazza, the easy 30-minute regional train ride brought us straight back to our hotel in Bari, winding down the day along the city's lively waterfront promenade.
