Monopoli

Nestled on the Adriatic coast of Puglia, Monopoli blends maritime authenticity with the historic charm of southern Italy. Our few days here were spent wandering through the labyrinth of the old town, characterized by narrow whitewashed streets, green-shuttered windows, and hidden stone archways draped in sunflowers. Serving as a relaxed base along our Italian itinerary, the city provided a perfect mix of sunny rooftop mornings and warm, illuminated evenings beneath the grand baroque architecture of the Monopoli Cathedral.

Highlights from Our Days in Monopoli

The Maze of the Old Town (Centro Storico): Exploring the historic center meant getting lost in narrow, pedestrian-only cobblestone alleys framed by towering limestone walls, hanging laundry, and rustic wooden doors. These quiet, sun-dappled streets provided beautiful, natural framing for Tamara's portraits as we navigated the city.

Rooftop Living: Mornings were spent up above the city on a sun-drenched private terrace. Surrounded by potted prickly pear cacti, climbing vines, and hanging festoon lights, the rooftop offered sweeping panoramic views over the sea of flat white roofs, traditional blue water tanks, and the soaring baroque dome of the cathedral.

The Cathedral & Campanile by Night: As the sun set, the historic skyline completely transformed. Warm lighting illuminated the imposing stone bell tower (campanile) and the majestic dome of the Basilica of the Madonna della Madia, glowing brightly against the pitch-black night sky.

Effortless Pugliese Charm: Monopoli felt deeply authentic and unhurried. Whether stopping for espresso in a hidden piazza or soaking up the coastal salt air, the city captured the essential, relaxed rhythm of southern Italy that we were looking for.
