Touching down in Naples marked the beginning of our journey through southern Italy, immediately throwing us into one of the most vibrant, unapologetic, and character-filled cities in Europe. Between narrow cobblestone alleys buzzing with scooters, soaring neoclassical domes, and the scent of wood-fired pizza wafting through the night air, the city operates on pure passion.
For Tamara, whose South American roots trace back through her Colombian heritage, the constant presence of Diego Maradona felt especially magnetic. In Naples, the Argentine legend isn't just a sports hero—he is practically revered as a patron saint, and stumbling across his face painted onto alleyway shutters, flags, and murals around nearly every corner made exploring the historic center feel wonderfully familiar and unforgettable.
Highlights from Naples
The Cult of Maradona Across Every Alley: From small street shrines tucked beside religious icons to full-scale murals and spray-painted portraits on shopfront roller shutters, Diego’s #10 jersey is woven into the very fabric of the city. Watching this deep southern Italian reverence for a South American icon created an amazing cross-cultural connection as we navigated the neighborhoods.
Under the Grand Glass Dome of Galleria Umberto I: Stepping into this 19th-century public gallery offered an immediate contrast to the gritty streets outside. Gazing straight up into the intricate ironwork and soaring ribbed glass dome—and framing Tamara on the marble balustrades above the Salone Margherita entrance—captured some of the most striking architectural and portrait perspectives of the entire trip.
Spaccanapoli & Via dei Tribunali by Night: As evening fell, the ancient Roman grid of the historic center came alive. Walking beneath strings of glowing festoon lights and hanging red heart banners reading Dal Presidente, the warm, bustling stone alleys provided an incredible street-level snapshot of authentic Neapolitan nightlife.
Monumental Duomo & Sacred Domes: Exploring the city’s spiritual heart revealed layers of grandeur, from the imposing neo-Gothic facade of the Naples Cathedral (Duomo di San Gennaro) glowing against the night sky, to standing beneath the dramatic coffered dome and central oculus of the neoclassical Basilica di San Francesco di Paola in Piazza del Plebiscito.
